While in our last blog we covered the basics & structure of a men’s suit, let’s talk about hacks & tips about wearing a suit. The suit is essential for every wardrobe for its sheer class, looks, and design. While for ages Suit have been seen as a formal piece of attire, in recent years combining it into more casual looks have created a whole new market for newer & younger audience. While the structure, material, and design have been also revolutionized, brands have worked on special Performance Suits which are geared towards mobility for the fast-paced lifestyle of the 21st century. From a basic Black & Navy 2 Button suit to a whole black tuxedo, from a double-breasted suit to wearing a blazer over jeans & t-shirt, from wearing overcoats over suits to wearing suits with a turtle neck, there are several new options to wear one.

Here 10 tips & hacks every men’s need to remember:

1. Find the right shoulder fitting

When buying a custom or a bespoke suit, but when you’re buying off the rack with a minimal option to get tailored, always look for the fitting around the shoulder. The shoulder padding and lining should fit match around your shoulder blade without it being extensively tight. Don’t go like 10-year-old thinking, I’ll go to the gym or lose some weight and it’ll fit to save a few hundred rupees while ruining the whole look. When you wear the suit jacket, close the top button and slide in your hand, if it slips easily, it’s a good fit.

2. Get your sleeve & pants tailored

While the shoulder is nearly impossible because of its structure and design for any possible alteration, sleeve and pants are options left longer by the brands for off the racks suits for the possible alteration. Even if the suit you purchased it the right fit according to you, pay a visit to the tailor, and get it tailored. Don’t save some money because it’ll look sloppy and lose its meaning of a formal suit. Shirt cuffs shouldn't go over the hands. Always leave the suit jacket’s cuff above the shirt sleeve either 2 buttons or 0.5 inches.

3. Invest in a good quality dress shirt, shoes, and belts

While a suit is a long-term investment that can quite a while depending on the quality, investing in other essentials that complete the looks are also important. If it’s a formal scenario wear suit, invest in a few good quality whites, sky blue, and black shirts along with a pair of good quality leather tan or black shoes & belts. Make sure to get a belt & shoes in a pair of same material and color for an instant better overall look. Also! Socks should cover your ankles, don’t wear white or anything funky, and stay away from no show or ankle socks with suits. If you wear suspenders, don't wear belts

4. Make sure to combine your tie right

Always make sure to get the right tie & pocket square. Let’s start with a tie, depending on the suit, you can either get a complimentary color or a something which will pop with some design and pattern. Secondly, make sure you don’t clash the fabric. A woolen tie will best work with a woolen suit and vice versa. Keep the width according to your lapel. If your lapel is slim, have a slimmer tie and if your lapel is wide, invest in a wider tie while with a tuxedo, it’ll be a good idea to get a bow tie. While pocket square, they don’t sever any purpose apart from the aesthetic looks which can be either combined with the same color & pattern as your tie or something which compliments the suit. The tip of your tie should be at/just before the buckle of the belt.

5. Invest in accessories

While the suits and other essentials areas are covered, to take it to the absolute next level is to invest in accessories. It will be that one thing which will make you stand out from the crowd. Invest in a good quality collar pin if your shirt has the adequate collar to support them, get good quality but a minimal design tie bar or tie pin to hold your tie in the right place, invest in minimal design but good quality cuff links for your shirts, and purchase a couple of boutonnières which is the flower which goes on the loop available on the lapel for special events and occasion for an aesthetic touch. The tie-bar should not be wider than the tie. When it comes to dressing up, less is indeed more.

6. Stay away from any funky

While the suit is one of the classic pieces of clothing, there have been a few modern touches that ruin it than making it better. It includes something like Hex Tie & Hex Belt. While they were in a big fashion a while ago with their honeycomb and funk design but they look immature which a suit isn’t made for. Secondly, invest in good quality leather or metal wallet instead of your dad’s old chunky wallet and gift him a slim wallet as well. The last thing you want to do is carry a big wallet in your perfectly made suit and ruin everything. Also! Stay away from canvas or cloth wallets as well. Don’t wear any neck jewelry, and keep other jewelry like bracelets and ring at a minimum.

7. Invest in a good quality watch

While owning a luxurious Richard Mile or wearing big Hublot is something everyone wants, but it’s not made for the suits. With a suit, stick to a sleek leather strap or metal link watch with minimal or classic design and slimmer face. Something like Omega Seamaster, Rolex Day-Date, and IWC watches are perfect for these looks. Something inexpensive like a Titan or Casio will work equally fine but avoid any kind of smartwatch. But never wear a sports watch so anything like Breitling, Tag Heuer or Rolex Daytona is out of the question. The watch shouldn’t lurk around on your sleeve, instead, it should be able to hide under the shirt sleeves.

8. Wear the suit right and don’t break rules

Now, that everything is on point there are some hard & fast rules which shouldn’t be broken. The last button is always undone, never button the last button. Always open all the buttons when you sit down. Never close any button if you’re wearing a vest or a sweater. Never carry a school or canvas bag with a suit, instead go for a leather backpack or a briefcase. The bottom button of the vest must always be unbuttoned too. The jacket should be long enough to cover the zipper of your trousers.

9. Layering could be your best bet in winters

Layer it up or down with other pieces of clothing in winters or autumn. Wear something like an overcoat over a suit, just keep it formal and remove when you get inside. Hang it an on a coat stand otherwise carry in your hand. Invest in a good quality woolen scarf which can be combined with the suit for the winters. Invest in good quality leather gloves and don’t wear snapbacks but instead top hate or fedora or a flat cap or a Peaky Blinder style newsboy cap.

10. Invest in essential colors first and then go for something unique or stylish

While we will talk more in our next blog, but first invest in a black or grey or charcoal or a navy suit followed by a simple sports jacket and then go for unique and different. If you’ve more tuxedo style or wedding events, a black suit or a black tux should be a priority to save on impromptu shopping or renting. If you don’t have many events, try to rent a tuxedo instead of purchasing one.

While these are few rules, tips, and hacks every man can and should follow with their suits but fashion keeps on changing. So, always stay updated on what’s new and what’s not. Always know the rules, and don’t break them for just a trend.
